Pro Travel Photo Tips with Tom Dowling – Introduction

Pro Travel Photo Tips - Introduction

We recently had the opportunity to chat with our dear friend and colleague Tom Dowling, a renowned pro photographer and fellow world traveler.

Tom shared his wealth of knowledge with us, and The Wanderlust Travel Blog features some of his pro tips and tricks.  You don't need a pro camera either - your mobile phone is likely equipped with some of the best camera gear money can buy these days!  With a little practice, anyone can learn capture great images, enabling you to show off your latest vacation to friends and family, while preserving a lifetime of beautiful memories!

Tom sees things through the eyes of an artist.  He has taught me that by altering my own perspective, following simple techniques developed by the Greeks and perfected by the Renaissance masters, we can achieve extraordinary results!

We had the pleasure of sharing an afternoon cruise to Fire Island NY, where Tom shot for most of the day.  I had been to Ocean Beach dozens of times - and I am still amazed! Evidently, before today, I never really saw Fire Island!

We passed a series of bicycles I hadn't even "noticed." Tom approached them, then paced around, selecting a vantage point (a vanishing point as he later taught me). He began snapping away, first in portrait, then landscape (always both; more on that later in the series), stopping to inspect his work on his Nikon Pro viewfinder before moving on.

A few days and a little "post-processing" later, Tom showed me the photo of those bikes, along with the others he captured that afternoon. I was stunned!

By applying a bit of perspective, and shooting from several angles, sometimes above, others while crouching like a lioness on the hunt, and chasing the light which is Tom's prize, he captured the very essence this colorful array of spokes, frames and wheels, bringing them to life in a way that I had seen, but never really experienced before!

If you checked out the album on Tom's link above, you can see that these aren't the average day-tripper's photos!  Your photos can be amazing too with a little know-how and some practice!

Whenever you explore a new destination, check out options for photo walks!  You can spend an afternoon with a handful of fellow amateur photographers exploring the world while capturing amazing images with the assistance of a pro.

You will be truly amazed at the results just one session can foster, and your friends will be doubly amazed at your prowess when you return from your travels with beautiful timeless keepsakes!
