International Driving Permit

Do you know about the International Driving Permit, or IDP?

If you are renting a car outside of the US, you may be required to have an IDP to "certify" your driver's license before travel.

Certain countries like Italy, Greece and China will not furnish you with a rental car without a valid IDP.  While some rental companies may never ask for it, the IDP is becoming more frequently enforced.  You also risk not being insured, as you can be classified as "driving without a license" depending on local vehicular traffic laws in your destination.

Before travel, be sure to check the details on your car rental company's website and the US Government IDP information page to learn about the rules in the countries you will be driving in while traveling.

You can get an IDP at any AAA full-service office nationwide.  It is inexpensive and takes only about 30 minutes once you fill out the form.  They will even take your photos (two passport sized are required) and print it up while you wait, and they are valid for 6 months from date of issue.

Avoid surprises and make sure you get your IDP before travel if you are renting a car on your next Total Excursion!.
