Murcia & Shrine of Fuensanta

We were disappointed to have missed the port of La Coruna (and Santiago de Compostela, which must remain our bucket list for now!), however Spain Day Tours issued an immediate refund.  Nothing to be done, as we were in the midst of a nasty storm and needed to move south and into the Straits of Gibraltar as soon as possible.

Finally, after 3 days at sea, we have finally made it to Murcia and our first port of call.

We tend to schedule a combination of Ship’s sponsored and independent tours, depending on cost and itinerary, to help us get the most out of our cruises.

Today, we took a Princess tour, and it did not disappoint!  We are led by a young lady who is a native of Murcia, and her love for this region, once the hotly contested border town between the Moors and Christian Spaniards, is evident in everything she imparts on us today.

Our first stop is the Shrine of Fuensanta, an imposing structure with two towers nestled within the peak of one of the numerous mountains in the region.  The landscape observed on the drive here is reminiscent of Las Vegas, and our guide confirms that they indeed get only 3 inches of rain each year, albeit in torrential downpours from which we are mercifully spared today.

Upon entering the Shrine, we see that there are florists preparing for a wedding later today, small wonder why, given the beauty and tranquility of this amazing chapel.
